Upcoming Event: PhD School at the University of Copenhagen

Linguistic ethnographic perspectives on contemporary challenges in education

PhD School at the Faculty of Humanities at University of Copenhagen

8th -9th of June 2026

Educational contexts are increasingly complexified by intersecting socio-cultural differences and inequalities as well as technological developments of digital resources and GAI. Hence, contemporary socializing factors include not only school and family, but also social media and digital communities that may shape ideologies and alignments related to life prospects and education. Linguistic ethnography has proven a fruitful approach in capturing the complexities of contemporary social life, and it is both assumed and shown that language holds an important practical, educational, economic, and symbolic position which is connected to wider historical processes. In this course we will explore some of the contemporary challenges in education as well as linguistic ethnography as a framework for uncovering these.

Linguistic ethnographic perspectives on contemporary challenges in education - PhD courses in Denmark

The course is open to international PhD students and may be of interest to students in programs with funding options for international events. Participation is on site and there is (unfortunately according to local policy) a fee for students outside the PhD school of the University of Copenhagen (286 GBP). The Linguistic Ethnography Forum can cover the fee for two PhDs from the LEF community. If you wish to apply for this submit this form to lingethnog@gmail.com no later than 10th of April 2026.

The deadline for registering for the course is 30th of April 2026

Upcoming Event: Two-Part E-Seminar

As LEF Committee, we have been cooking up ways for our community to come together and exchange ideas beyond our standard conferences. So it is our pleasure to now invite you to a two-part e-seminar taking place soon!

Our e-seminar will centre on a recent Special Issue of Multilingua, guest edited by our Lian Malai Madsen, Anne Larsen and Janus Spindler Møller:

Critical reflections on criticality in the study of language, culture and society”.

But this will not be a standard webinar. Those of you who have been on the ling-ethnog mailing list for more than a decade (!) might still remember the e-seminars that used to take place right here on the mailing list. We thought we’d bring that format back for the first part of our e-seminar.

Here’s how it will work:

  • April 1: We will send out the Special Issue’s Editorial for you to read.

  • April 10: Mi-Cha Flubacher and David Karlander will launch a discussion of the article on the mailing list.

  • April 10–30: Everyone is warmly invited to share thoughts and join the discussion on the list.

The second part of the e‑seminar will take place as a webinar‑style event on May 5, 3:00–4:30 pm GMT, during which the Special Issue contributors will present their papers and respond to themes from the email discussion.

You can already register for the second part here:

We hope many of you will join one or both parts of the e‑seminar and look forward to fruitful discussions!
